St. Louis – November 9, 2009 – Soulard Art Market & Contemporary Gallery is proud to present “Unparalleled Fiber” in our main gallery. The best of the area’s many great fiber artists will be presenting works that push the limits of the medium. However, fans of more traditional fiber work shouldn’t despair, we’ll have plenty of familiar fiber favorites for you to enjoy. The scarf wall alone will give you a warm and fuzzy feeling, perfect for chasing away the winter blues.

Exhibit Jurors-

Jay Skeels began with teaching art to both elementary and secondary levels on education, where he was named as Art Teacher of the Year by the Art Educators of Iowa. His art experience includes all media of design, and he progressed to showing and selling fiber, ceramics and painting in art fairs throughout Iowa and St. Louis. He is now a resident artist with the Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery.

Carla Duncan enjoys being creative and making hand-made products. Six years ago she took her first chain maille class and began weaving with metal, not dreaming that it would turn into a business: Duncan Designs. Carla has also coordinated the Arts Group of Union Avenue, and she helped to found the Ivory Perry Park Concert Series seven years ago. She has taught fourth grade for the last 25 years.

The Soulard Art Market & Contemporary Gallery (S.A.M.) features monthly exhibitions in our main gallery,that showcase a rotating selection of the area’s most talented artists. Exhibitions and events are free and open to the public, (unless otherwise noted) and most artwork is offered for sale. The gallery is operated by a core group of fifteen resident artists who each maintain a personal display space. We are home to some of the area’s most respected artists working in a variety of media including: drawing, painting, digital and traditional photography, mixed media, sculpture and jewelry. Located in the heart of Soulard on the corner of 12th and Russell, Soulard Art Market is a fantastic arts destination.

In partnership with the gallery is Youth Education and Health in Soulard. YEHS is a nonprofit community‐based organization that was founded in 1972 to develop needed services in order to save the historic Soulard neighborhood from being torn down and to prevent the displacement of low and moderate income residents of the area. YEHS also hosts summer employment/training, tutoring, and recreation for disadvantaged St. Louis youths.

The Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery is calling for submissions to “Remastered” a juried exhibition of local artists. This Two Part Exhibition runs from November 13, 2009 through January 10, 2010. S.A.M. is looking to represent a select group of artists in our Contemporary Art Gallery, to exhibit alongside our 15 resident artists. View dates for details.

Exhibition Theme:

Imagine Da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" if it were painted by Van Gogh. "Remastered" is your chance to re-imagine famous artworks of the past; yesterday's masterpieces as created by the masters of today. Artists from our region will be challenged to create reproductions from these artistic greats in their own unique style.

This show is a two exhibition consisting of one month each. The first part of this exhibition will run from November 13, 2009 through December 6th, 2009 and the second part of this exhibition will run from December 11th, 2009 through January 10th, 2010. Definitely an exhibition not to miss and quite a treat for that art lover. After-all 'tis the season for giving.

Submission Guidelines:

-Submission is FREE!

- Artists may submit up to four original works for consideration.

- 2D artwork must be framed and ready for hanging (no saw tooth hangers please). Unframed “gallery wrapped” canvasses are acceptable.

- If submitting an exact replica, original Masters Artwork should not be copyrighted.

- Sculpture should be no taller than six feet. Artists must provide their own pedestals, if needed.

-No video or ceiling suspended work will be accepted.

- All artwork for consideration must be submitted via JPEG/JPG image.

- File size for each JPEG/JPG cannot exceed 500kb and should be named as such: Artist’s Name_Artwork Title_Dimensions.jpg John Smith_Artwork1_16x20.jpg)

- Accompanying submission must include the following: Title/ Media/Measurements for each piece submitted along with Artist’s name, and contact information (e-mail address & phone number).

- Website address submissions will not be accepted.

- Late entries will not be accepted, no exceptions.

- Accepted artists must be willing to be filmed and/or must be willing and available to participate in any press interviews, documentaries, and/or photo releases. -Accepted artists must submit an operational costs fee of $30 for Part 1 of this exhibition, running from November 13, 2009 through December 6, 2009.

If selected for Part 2 of this exhibition only, accepted artists must submit an operational costs fee of $30, running from December 11, 2009 through January 10, 2010.

If submitting for both sessions of "Remastered" show November 13, 2009 through January 10th, 2010; accepted artists must submit a discounted operational costs fee of $50 total. This will entitle accepted artist to exhibit the full duration from November 13, 2009 through January 10, 2010.

Awards:

-One accepted artist will be selected to receive the “Juror’s Choice Award”.

-The award will be presented to the recipient during a special ceremony at the Opening Reception.

-The winning artist will be recognized as the gallery’s “Spotlight Artist” with a featured space in the gallery during a future exhibition.

Sales and Commission:

-Soulard Art Market does not charge a commission on sales made during the exhibition. Artists will retain 100% of sales. Artists may list works as NFS.

Allan Appt - Featured Artist Series August 8th, 2009

Alan has been painting most of his life. He had a studio and Exhibition Gallery on the second floor of the Adler Frame Bldg, 21st and Washington Avenue, for many years with several other Artists’.

He is an impressionist in oil. He feels as though he makes a significant statement with the sole use of palette knives, for the utmost freedom with a way that is both intense and dramatic. In his application he strives to be unregimented and maintain a purity of free expression. He indicates when he walks into his studio; he becomes transported to another place. His work is in many private collections around the country.

"Spoked!": An art show for bicycle fans

The Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery is calling for submissions to “Spoked!” a juried exhibition of local artists. Exhibition runs from Sept., 4 through October 2. S.A.M. is looking to represent a select group of artists in our Contemporary Art Gallery, to exhibit alongside our 15 resident artists.

Here's what the gallery has to say about the event: "In conjunction with the Tour of Missouri, which is a world-class cycling event, we are proud to announce our exhibition “Spoked”. We are seeking artworks that feature bicycling as a theme for inclusion in our show. Our gallery is on the race route, and we have special hours and events planned that are sure to draw a crowd. The eyes of the world will be looking our way and we’re gearing up for the liveliest show this town has seen. Get crankin’!"

The gallery looking for any medium of artwork (painting, photography, sculpture, jewelry) that in any way features bikes or cycling. There is no submission fee, and full details can be found at the event's Web site.

Artists are being asked to consider donating bicycle-themed artwork to a charity silent auction. All proceeds will go directly to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Amachi program which assists children of incarcerated parents. Each artist who donates an artwork valued greater than $100 to the auction will have his name entered into a drawing to receive 2 tickets (value $500) to the Tour of Missouri Gala, a black tie affair presenting the best 125 cyclists from around the world. The auction as well as the gala will be held on Sept. 6 at the City Museum.

The gallery is located 2028 S. 12th St. in St. Louis and is on the course for Stage 1 of the Tour of Missouri on Labor Day (Sept. 7).

At left is a piece I'm considering entering in the contest. It's called "Night Ride, Without Lights, in Southern Illinois." Click on the image to see a more detailed view! The inspiration for this piece is the piece "Midnight on the Ocean" featured in The Three Stooges film "Pop Goes the Easel."

The Soulard Art Market & Contemporary Gallery is a unique studio and gallery complex located in the historic Soulard neighborhood of Saint Louis, Missouri. Maintained by a core of fifteen
professional artists, The Soulard Art Market & Contemporary Gallery is a venture which strives
towards making a difference. In partnership with the gallery is Youth Education and
Health in Soulard. YEHS is a nonprofit community-based organization that was founded in 1972 to develop needed services in order to save the historic Soulard neighborhood from being torn down and to prevent the displacement of low and moderate income residents of the area. YEHS also hosts summer employment/training, tutoring, and recreation for disadvantaged St. Louis
youths.

Bob Reuter 's photography pieces are simply amazing. The often rough and edgy black and white photography will let you reminisce of different times. We come to the end of the series of portraits of artists and their work I shot recently at Soulard Art Market. This might be the best photograph of the set, considerations of the artists and art work aside. I was making a comical effort to light most of these portraits with off-camera remote-controlled flashes, something I'm just learning. This one, however, worked well.

Beatty is an interesting guy. He spent twenty years in the navy as a submarine crewman, mostly in reconnaissance. He told me just briefly (security, you know) about picking up Navy Seals in the open ocean, with no knowledge of where they came from or the nature of their mission. His artistic project is called Vision For Vets (web site in production). This particular work is called Voyage of Faith. The craftsmanship is amazing, as you can see in the lower picture. Each of those tiny screw eyes had to be set in precisely made pilot holes made with a micro-drill. The local supplier ran out of the part and Beatty had to make the rest himself from brass wire. This weekend (March 21st through March 22nd, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. both days).

Jonathan Muehlke was born in Bangkok in 1983. He grew up the son of a U.S. foreign service diplomat and now pastor. Jonathan lived in Thailand, Taiwan, China, Turkey, and the United States. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese in 2007. He is now an artist in residence in the Master of Fine Arts program at Washington University. He has studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA, the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence RI, Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China, and the Yale University School of Art, Norfolk CT.

Jonathan is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and honors,including, from Yale, the Ellen Stokel Fellowship and, from Washington University, the Hazel H. Huntsinger Memorial Prize in Painting, the Danforth Scholarship and Freeman Foundation grants from Duke University

Statement by Jonathan P. Muehlke on March 3 , 2009 about his own work

I am interested in the experiential nature of images and objects, narrative and abstract. Abstract expressionism and minimalism are the two art movements that have had a primary impact on my work. Following these historical contexts, I am presently focused on developing a new language, combining Chinese calligraphy, oil painting, and graffiti. Recently I have been interested in painting as a form of story-telling and communication in coded forms. I see these forms as of, but not limited to letters, accounts, poems, prayers, and eulogies. I regard most of my paintings as self portraits, remnants, and performances, albeit somewhat tongue in cheek, reflecting different stages of my life.

The body of work that will be on display investigates humor, meditation, play, and art as a celebration of mystery. Here I endeavor to create a collection of intimate-sized 8x10 inch grey
"haiku paintings" which investigate the numerous shades and processes of grey oil paint. The small works will culminate into larger grey paintings in the future.

Anita Andell

Anita Andell, a 'late bloomer'as some would say,picked up a paintbrush for the first time not quite 3 yrs ago. At the urging of her friends,she finally did.

Anita has had a fascination with nature most of her life.Trees are her forte,the depth, form and structure are what intrigue her most.She is self taught,but, has a passion for what she can convey to a canvas,or actually,any flat surface that comes her way.Anita has learned to paint with her emotions,to convey the many different facets of the human psyche.

What she has tried to accomplish is the feeling of being in the painting,a still pond surrounded by calm,or a full moon that can be stark yet calming at the same time.Her florals are of a brilliant array of colors,with depth and movement.She enjoys doing what she calls 'dream skapes'usually in shades of blue and green,these will generally also involve rock formations. She has also over the years worked with inks,pencils and charcol,at times using a blend of all.

Anita grew up in St.Louis,yet,she has lived in numerous places,by the ocean, in the foothills of Colorado,and assorted small towns in the midwest,she has been known to draw on her memories of these places or even a book she's read to create her interpretation of what she has seen or read about.

Her inspiritation to paint came from her mother,an accomplished artist in her own right.Now ,even though she has passed, she still inspires Anita to create ,to move forward with her ideas and creative projects.

Featured Artist 3/14 Melissa Schramm

Melissa Schramm is a self taught photographer who dabbles in many forms of art. Raised in a gypsy lifestyle; she has lived many places and has traveled all over the world.

In her journeys she has come across many experiences that have helped to mold her into the tormented artist that she is. Her work is a reflection of visions, nightmares and abandonment that she finds true beauty in.

Melissa has a degree in Psychology and quit grad school and her career in counseling to pursue the arts. She current lives as a hermit, hiding away in someone attic secretly hoping to be discovered.

Each weekend established and emerging artists are given the opportunity to use our main gallery space to display and promote their work. Every Saturday and Sunday afternoon a different St. Louis area artist will be available to discuss their work, offer a mini class, or demonstrate their process.

The mission of this series is to help local artists increase their visibility in the art community by allowing them to use the SAM Gallery as a place to welcome their potential buyers. We are looking for the truly creative and talented to include in our gallery.

Michael Matthes wins Juror's Choice Award

Congratulations to Michael Matthes who recently was awarded for our Juror's Choice award in our recent exhibition "Labor of Love". Michael will have his works displayed in our "Artist Spotlight" area during the Urban Awakening show in April 2009.

"Michael Matthes won the Juror's Choice Award in the recent show at Soulard Art Market for the painting on the wall behind him. I like it a lot: Mondrian shapes, Frankenthaler colors and Dizzy Gillespie rhythm. Matthes is slowly and carefully developing the display of his art. He is working on a web site but it's not ready yet. I'll add a link here later on when I learn it's online. He will be the featured artist at an upcoming show at SAM. Portraits of St. Louis Artists

Bob Crowe, known to many for his infamous blog "St. Louis Daily Photo" came for a visit during the Art pick-up for the Labor of Love Exhibition recently. Bob claims to be an amateur photographer however his photography tells a story in itself, the richness of color and the subject is always a cerebral intensity that is often craved upon by professional photographers. To sum it up, this guy is really good!

Besides his wonderful photography, he is a fantastic person to chat with. Check out his blog to see what Bob is all about!

Barbara Merlotti

I met Barbara Merlotti when she came by Soulard Art Market to pick up the two works on the wall behind her. Merlotti's personal history and artistic style are complex. Rather than having me try to summarize it, I recommend that you read her artistic statement and biography. The work is small-scale, often postcard size, which produces considerable intimacy. The examples in the gallery on her web site strike me as charged, mysterious self-portraits, each with a different emotional tone. The pictures on the wall here are different, drawn with chalk pastel, speaking of lushness, rhythm and fertility.

Garret Roberts

Garrett Roberts is a photographer who has permanent space there (so you can go check it out any time). His mix of images done in infrared, hand-colored or shot with a Holga is fascinating. I just love his photo in the bottom picture, a cartoonish bowler passing in front of the Arch in a parade, shot with a Holga. Garrett, hold that one for me. I'd like to buy it the next time I'm at SAM.

It's almost a cliché to say that drawing is the purest expression of an artist's ideas, an unmediated glimpse into his or her soul. When the drawing is one of many in a sketchbook, which can include hundreds of individual efforts to capture experience, a glimpse can become a prolonged exploration of a creative sensibility.

Even with the triumph of the computer, the traditional practice of an artist carrying a notebook, ready to be pulled out and put to use at a moment's inspiration, is as strong as ever.

Two local exhibitions are focusing on the artist's sketchbook.

"The Sketchbook Project," which will be on display only Wednesday evening at the Soulard Art Market, allows visitors to wallow in the sketchbook experience — if that's their desire. More than 2,000 notebooks by artists from around the world will be laid out on tables, available for thumbing through — and purchase.

Organized by Art House in Atlanta, this is its third installment and the first to travel, to Chicago, Washington and other cities as well as St. Louis.

Jane Linders said she heard about the project on the Internet, e-mailed the organizer and booked her gallery, which she describes as "fun and funky," into the tour. Her contribution was to spread the word about the project among Missouri artists, so there will be a healthy inclusion of Show-Me staters.

The images from the Atlanta opening indicate that a good time was being had by all. And it's likely that that experience will be duplicated here.

"private(dis)play" at COCA is more of a normal exhibition, open over a month with regular hours. The books are installed in cases.

Unlike what one expects from "The Sketchbook Project," in which the good, the bad and the ugly as well as the figurative, the abstract and the undecided vie for attention, and handling, the work in "private(dis)play" comes from the same place.

The artists are members of an embattled group that explores academic figuration. Although the work sometimes has merits when seen one-by-one, it is hard to take when seen together, as it is here.

Why an artist such as like Vincent Desiderio would want to sketch a portrait of a woman that looks like a bad effort by 1930s realist Raphael Soyer is beyond my understanding.

There are a few interesting inclusions: Julie Heffernan, Catherine Howe and Ella Gant show rebellious spirits. But some of the dregs of the new academia — the egregious Bo Bartlett, the leading contender to inherit the mantle of reactionary realist now that Andrew Wyeth is dead, as well as Kauper and Desiderio — drag the show down.

The Soulard Art Market (SAM) and Contemporary Gallery is calling for submissions to
"The Next Generation of Artists", a juried exhibition of student artists from May 8, 2009 through June 6, 2009.

Prizes will be awarded by select businesses such as Art Mart, Third Degree Glass, and more!

Exhibition runs from May 8 – June 6, 2009, with opening receptions Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, from 7pm to 10pm.

Soulard Art Market is looking to represent talented student artists in our Contemporary Art Gallery, Artists must be between the ages of 14-19. We will be asking for proof with a student I.D. at the time of drop-off.

Each artist may submit up to two original works.

We accept most media (Sorry, NO video or ceiling-suspended artwork).

Artwork displayed last year may not be submitted.

Atlanta ’s Art House Co-op Brings Exhibition to SOULARD ART MARKET

St. Louis, MO , March 11th, 2009 – On March 11, 2009, Atlanta ’s Art House Co-op Gallery will locally exhibit The Sketchbook Project. The exhibition will take place at Soulard Art Market, 2028 S. 12th Street , St. Louis , MO 63104 , from 6:30 until 10 p.m. The St. Louis exhibition will be the sixth stop of a nine location tour. The full tour includes the cities of Atlanta, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, St. Louis, and Brooklyn.

The Sketchbook Project includes 2,785 participants from the U.S. as well as 44 other countries, 72 of the participating artists are from Missouri.

Each participant was given a 3 ½ in. x 5 ½ in. Moleskine® sketchbook and the theme “everyone we know.” The visual interpretation of that theme, as well as visual style and media was left up to the individual artist.

The Sketchbook Project was open to all applicants on a first come first serve basis at Art House Co-op’s website, www.arthousecoop.com, where artists can create profiles, share portfolio images, and interact with each other, essentially forming a social networking site, as well as a collective of artists from various nationalities, ideologies, styles, and artistic backgrounds.

Rock Paper Scissors

Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery welcomes St. Louis area artists, Bob Reuter, Julie Malone and David Langley in the Rock, Paint, Scissors exhibit this March. Through photography, painting and collage, each artist introduces viewers to their passion for creating.

Bob Reuter’s view from behind the lens showcases the South Side’s most influential and infamous St. Louisians. Reuter’s edgy photographs capture the essence of the characters he shoots, namely local artists and musicians.

Using her distinctive markings and intense coloring, Julie Malone has created raw, gritty works for Rock, Paint, Scissors. Inspired by dark environments, she scrapes the pavement and bellows out the blacker side of her psyche.

With pages of a 1950’s Life magazine, David Langley creates humorous and intriguing collages and paintings juxtaposing a time gone by with contemporary thoughts. His work touches on gender roles featuring vintage pop culture that transcends the intended era specific commercialization.

The Rock, Paint, Scissors exhibit, along with the one night only national traveling Sketchbook Project, will open Wednesday March 11th with an additional artist’s reception and special performance by Bob Reuter on Friday March 13th at Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Gallery, 2028 South 12th Street, St. Louis, MO 63104. The Sketchbook Project is coming to Soulard Art Market

The folks at Art-House Co-op agreed to exhbit the Sketchbook Project at Soulard ART Market on March 11, 2008 from 6 to 10pm. The Sketchbook Project is like a concert tour, but with sketchbooks. Art-House sends you a sketchbook, you matke the art. Then Art House is taking all the sketchbooks on a 6 city tour to galleries and museums across the U.S. The goal of the exhibition is to encourage anyone to create artwork and build a collective of sketchbooks made by artists from all over the world. The sketchbooks will be plastered across our wall and on tables , free for people to flip through. Art House in Atlanta Georgia is bringing artists together and giving everyone a chance to show in museums and galleries around the country. It's all about community.

Call for Entries

The Soulard Art Market and Contemporary Art Gallery is calling for submissions to ”Winter Blues" a juried exhibition of artists that reflects any and all aspects of the blues i.e. Blues Music, the color blue, to feel 'blue'.

The Exhibition runs from January 8, 2009, 2009 through February 7, 2009.

We are looking to represent over 30 artists in our Contemporary Art Gallery, exhibiting with our 14 resident artists.

-December 28th, 2008 - Deadline for submissions.

-December 30th, 2008 - Accepted Artists Notification.

-January 4th, 2009 - drop-off date for accepted works.

Acceptance fee of $30 payable in cash, money order, or check. If Paying by Money Order/Check please make payable to YEHS, no exceptions.

-January 8th, 2009 - “Winter Blues” Casual preview, 7pm to 10pm
-January 9th, 2009 - “Winter Blues” Formal reception, 7pm to 10pm
-February 8th, 2009 -- Art pick-up 12pm to 5pm ____________________________________________________________

Submission Guidelines: * Submission is FREE!

* Each artist may submit up to three original works for consideration.

* We are looking for all forms of art, styles and points of view.

* 2D work should be no larger than 4ft x 4ft in total.

Must be framed and ready for hanging.

* Sculpture should be no taller than 6ft and must have a stand or be displayable on a 10" deep windowsill.

* All artwork for consideration must be submitted via JPEG/JPG image.
* An accompanying e-mail must include title/ media/ measurements, contact e-mail address,and phone number.

* File size for each work cannot exceed 500kb, JPEG Files should be named as such:

Artists Name_Name of Piece_Dimensions.jpg (John Smith_Artwork1_16x20.jpg).

All submissions are to be received no later than December 28th, 2008, by 7pm CST for consideration.

Accepted artists will be contacted by December 30th, 2008 and promotional postcards will be available for collection from the gallery during scheduled drop-off.

Accepted artists must submit an operational costs fee of $30. If paying by money order or check, must be made payable to YEHS.

There will be no commission; artists will retain 100% of sales.
